ramon jané - les gunyoles, penedès, barcelona

Ramon Jané and his good friend Toni Carbó began Mas Candí in 2006, combining organic, sustainably grown grapes from both their family’s vineyards to finally produce their own wines. The first of many generations to break the tradition of selling their entire yield to large Cava producers. Mas Candí focussed on traditional-method grower sparkling wines (first under the Cava appellation then under Corpinnat) and still wines, sustainably farmed and ethically produced.

In 2016 Ramon decided to go one step further and produce wines under his own name, from his family’s vines, made with no additions whatsoever. Pure grape juice, wild fermented and with no added sulphur. The focus here is on indigenous Penedès varieties that are perfectly suited to this coastal valley and reflect its terroirs and history perfectly. This fertile Mediterranean region, on clay and calcareous soil over limestone bedrock has a long winemaking history and the wines have their own unique expression and character. Ripe, concentrated wines with a pronounced freshness, minerality and salinity. Ramon is also particularly interested in reviving near extinct indigenous varietals which is why you’ll find an emphasis on little known varieties such as Sumoll and Mandó as well as the local champions Xarel-lo, Macabeu and Parellada.

Ramon’s wines are pure and honest expressions of this unsung region. Ultimately they are bright, fresh and layered. Delicious wines that reflect honest and traditional farming with a fresh and pure winemaking vision.
